Hope Bagot

St John the Baptist

SY8 3AF   Parking  at Village Hall.   Church open. Access is up steps either from the Village Hall car park or from the lane (also steps)

St John's is a most attractive little Norman church situated in  the secluded Hope Bagot village on tthe southern slopes of Titterstone Clee. The parish is the smallest  independent parish in Shropshire.

Approaching through the attractive south porch, probably 14th century, the visitor passes through the round arched Norman doorway.

The most striking feature of the interior is the chancel arch, also round arched, carved on the capitals.

There are splayed Norman windows in the north walls.

The woodwork is largely 17th century.

A huge yew tree, believed to be well over 1600 years old, spreads

over the holy well.

The churchyard is a wildflower meadow.

The font is probably Norman
